Butch Haynes (Kevin Costner) escapes from prison with another inmate. During a chance encounter with a terrified family, they kidnap seven-year-old Phillip Perry (T. J. Lowther). Haynes and the boy flee towards the border, forming an extraordinary bond on the journey. Pursuing them is a group of lawmen led by Red Garnett (Clint Eastwood). The officers aim to apprehend the fugitive at all costs, with Garnett and Sally Gerber (Laura Dern) making it their mission to bring him back to prison alive.
