Angela Lee Duckworth is well recognized for her studies on grit, which she describes as the ability to maintain motivation and tenacity in the face of adversity. She devised the Grit Scale, which serves as a gauge of this concept. Duckworth graduated with honors from Harvard College in 1992 with a B.A. in Neurobiology. She then received a Marshall Scholarship and graduated with an M.Sc. in neuroscience from the University of Oxford in 1996, and with a Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Pennsylvania in 2006. In 2013, she was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship grant for her work. Duckworth worked as a management consultant for McKinsey & Company after earning her master's degree. Approximately one year later, she left the company to become a math teacher at Lowell High School in San Francisco.
Duckworth is the founder and CEO of Character Lab, a non-profit organization whose purpose is to enhance scientific findings that support the development of young children. She is also the Rosa Lee and Egbert Chang Professor at the University of Pennsylvania, as well as the faculty co-director of the Penn-Wharton Behavior Change for Good Initiative and the faculty co-director of Wharton People Analytics at the University of Pennsylvania. Duckworth's TED talk is one of the most watched presentations of all time. Her book Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance is a New York Times bestseller, ranking number one on the list. She also co-hosts the podcast No Stupid Questions with Stephen Dubner.
